Nickelodeon is a cable and satellite network owned by MTV Networks Kids & Family Group, a segment of Viacom. It is available throughout the United States, and on six continents. Nickelodeon was originally founded under the name “Pinwheel,” in 1977, and was created to be exclusively dedicated to children’s programming. The first network of its kind, Pinwheel aired original shows commercial free from 7a.m. to 9p.m. Today, it is the signature children’s network, and includes spin-off segments such as “Nick Jr.,” for pre-school aged children, “TeeNick,” for pre-teens, and “Nick at Nite,” featuring sitcom reruns for adults.
Although Nickelodeon struggled at first, it has become one of the most popular networks on television, and a favorite of children ages 2 -12. It built headquarters at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando, Florida, where many of its shows are filmed. The creation of the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards helped transform Nickelodeon from a children’s TV network into a kid’s entertainment brand. Animated series such as “Rugrats,” “Doug,” and “The Ren and Stimpy Show,” became signature “NickToons,” and became fan favorites. The sketch comedy series, “All That,” was created in 1994, lasting ten seasons and launching the careers of several actors, such as Amanda Bynes and Keenan Thompson. Nickelodeon also built a production company, “Nickelodeon Movies,” creating animated and live action kids’ films, in addition to partnering with other companies to produce films like the box office blow out, “Avatar.”
Nickelodeon is the place for fun, a cartoons, live action shows, and interactive web games. Kids can choose from a wide selection of their favorite cartoons, such as “Pig Goat Banana Cricket,” “Rocket Monkeys,” and the all-time silly “Spongebob Squarepants.” Cartoons aren’t your thing?
